Canvas integrates with Google Drive (LTI 1.3) making it easy for you to share content and collaborate with others, students and instructors alike.

Overview of Google Drive (LTI 1.3)

The Instructure product team (Canvas) has been working with Google to transition the existing Google Apps LTI to the new Google Drive (LTI 1.3) tool.

Google Apps 1.1 is removed from Canvas as of 8/16/2023. The tool is deprecated and replaced by Google Drive LTI 1.3. Although the integration is deprecated, all instructor and student Google Drive files will remain intact.

With Google Drive (LTI 1.3), you can expect better stability for all login issues that were encountered previously. You will have access to all the functionality of the legacy Google Apps. Additionally, you can also:

Embed Google files within your Rich Content Editor. This includes Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets. Both teachers and students will be able to do this.
Allow students to submit Drive files to Canvas assignments that you can grade in SpeedGrader

Embed Google Drive files in the Rich Content Editor of a Page

When you create Pages, Assignments, Announcements, or any other tool that uses the Rich Content Editor, you have the ability to embed Google Drive files directly with the editor to easily display to students. Both Teachers and Students have the ability to embed content from their Google Drive into the Rich Content Editor, depending on the Canvas tool.

Below we have provided the steps for how to embed Google Drive files within Pages, but these steps can be used within any Canvas tool that employs the Rich Content Editor such as Assignments and Announcements.

Step 1: Create a Page in Canvas

Step 2: Sign in with your Google Account

Step 3: Inserting Files using Google Drive

A new window will appear that allows you to insert files using Google Drive. Use the different options available to locate the file from your Drive or to upload the file you want to embed, and click Add.

You will be notified that Attaching this file will change the sharing setting and allow anyone with the link to access it. Click Attach to continue

You will now return to your Canvas Rich Content Editor. You can continue editing or adding content here.

Add Google Drive files in Modules

Step 1: Add a Google Drive file as a Module Item

Step 2: Sign in to your Google Account

Step 3: Inserting Files using Google Drive

A new window will appear that allows you to insert files using Google Drive. Use the different options available to locate the file from your Drive or to upload the file you want to embed, and click Add.

You will be notified that Attaching this file will change the sharing setting and allow anyone with the link to access it. Click Attach to continue.

The pop up window will now close and you will return to your Canvas view. Click on Add Item and the Google Drive file should be added to your module.

Student Submission using Google Drive

When instructors create an assignment in Canvas and select the Online submission type and allow for File uploads, students have the ability to submit using their Google Drive content. When instructors are ready to grade, the submissions will populate within SpeedGrader for grading.
