Using TidyUP
With TidyUP, you can efficiently remove orphaned files that are no longer in use within your course. Such files may result from course copies from prior semesters, updating course content with new materials, or duplicating files during efforts to improve digital accessibility for your course materials.
- Click TidyUP from your course navigation menu (see Accessing TidyUP to enable). Students will not be able to see this menu on their course.
- You will see a welcome page for TidyUP with three tabs on top:
- Home, where you will see a button labeled Scan Course. You can choose to either:
- Scan your course for all file types.
- Scan for custom file types.
- Activity, where you will see all prior activity using TidyUP within your course. If this is your first time, this tab will be empty.
- Scan History, where you will see any TidyUP scanning processes that have been completed.
- To scan your course for all file types, select All file types and click the Scan Course button. If you want to search specific file types, choose Custom, check the boxes for the file types you need, and click Scan Course.
- Upon completion, you will receive a report containing three tabs that provide a detailed list of files, folders, and Canvas content from your course, as illustrated below.

- Start with the Canvas Content tab, then proceed to Files, and finish with Folders. This process helps you determine whether items are part of any modules, are published or unpublished, and whether they contain content.
- On the Canvas Content tab, you will see three columns indicating whether the item:
- Is published within your course.
- Is included in one or more modules.
- Contains content.
The tab also displays the Last Updated status for each item. Review each entry carefully to determine whether it can be safely deleted. Consider the following guidelines:- If an item is unpublished, not included in any module, contains no content, and has not been updated recently, it may be appropriate to remove it.
- If an item is unpublished, included in a module, contains content, and has not been updated in some time, preview the item by clicking its name before deciding whether to delete it.
- If multiple items share the same name and only one is published while others are unpublished with recent activity, this may indicate duplicate items suitable for deletion.
- After deleting any items through the Canvas Content tab, click Rescan before moving to the Files tab.
- In the Files tab, review the following:
- Used In column – files that are in use cannot be deleted.
- Last Updated column – to confirm when files were last modified.
You may sort items based on the Last Updated date or the Used In status.- If files are not in use anywhere, they may be good candidates for deletion.
- If files have not been updated recently, preview them first. You may unpublish files before deleting them by clicking the pencil icon in the Actions column.
- Rescan the course and wait for the results to appear. Return to the Canvas Content tab to review unpublished items and decide whether to delete them. You may repeat Steps 8 and 9 as needed.
- Once you confirm that no additional files need to be deleted, you can move to the Folders tab and review for empty folders. You can safely delete any empty folders listed.
