Tool Description

Qualtrics is a powerful online survey tool that allows one to build surveys, distribute surveys and analyze responses from one convenient online location.

 

Creating surveys with Qualtrics

Step 1: Request Qualtrics Account
  1. Navigate to the Division of IT's Qualtrics page.
  2. Locate the appropriate designated contact.
  3. Emailthe contact and request a Qualtrics account.
    1. Be sure to request the API account.
  4. Once the account has been created, navigate to tamu.qualtrics.com and confirm the account is activated.
Step 2: Linking Qualtrics Account to Canvas
  1. Log into Canvas at canvas.tamu.edu.
  2. On the global navigation pane, click Account.
  3. Select Qualtrics LTI.
  4. In the Select Qualtrics domain text box, enter tamu.ca1.qualtrics.com and select the option that appears.
  5. Click Login Now. A pop-up window will appear.
  6. Under the sign in select Sign In with SSO.
  7. Enter tamu and click Continue.
  8. Sign in using your TAMU credentials.
Step 3: Build and Publish Survey in Qualtrics
  1. Login to tamu.qualtrics.com with your TAMU credentials if not already logged in.
  2. On the bottom of the left side bar, click Create a new project.
  3. Click Survey under the From scratch section.
  4. Click Get Started on the sidebar that appears.
  5. Give the survey a title and select Create Project.
    1. If you'd like to copy a survey or use a different survey, select the appropriate option from the dropdown menu.
  6. Create the survey according to your needs.
  7. In the top right corner, click Publish and select Publish again on the pop-up window.
    1. The pop-up window provides recommendations to improve the survey. If desired, apply the recommendations prior to publishing.
    2. The survey must be published in Canvas to successfully be used within Canvas.
Enable Survey in Canvas
  1. In the Global Navigation, click your Account link.
  2. Click the Qualtrics LTI link.
  3. Locate the survey in the list of your published surveys from Qualtrics.
  4. Toggle the setting to Enable survey for Canvas for the survey you plan to use.
  5. Canvas auto-saves your settings here.
Step 5: Add Survey to a Canvas Assignment
  1. In Course Navigation, click the Assignments link.
  2. Click + Assignment, to create a new survey assignment.
  3. After naming the assignment, locate the Submission Type option.
  4. After selecting External Tool in the dropdown, click Find.
  5. Locate and select Qualtrics LTI from the list.
  6. In the pop-up, select My surveys and select the desired survey from the Qualtrics account, then click Next.
  7. Toggle the announcement or reminder option if either is needed.
  8. Click Save. Close the Configure External Tool window.
  9. After editing other assignment options, remember to Save the Assignment.

Best Practices for Using Qualtrics LTI

  • Preview the Survey in Qualtrics prior to publishing to ensure accuracy.
  • The survey Assignment will need to be added to a Module for users to access it.
  • Consider using the Announcement and Reminder [in Step 5] to encourage users to complete the survey.
  • Users must Publish surveys within Qualtrics and Enable them within Canvas for surveys to be used within an assignment.
