Tool Description
Panopto provides an innovative, easy to understand way to record and catalogue lecture videos, allowing students to easily access the recordings.
Setting Up Panopto
This section presents information on how Panopto can support teaching faculty to create a better experience for students outside of the classroom. With features such as the ability to assign in-video quizzes, the smart search function within videos, and the automatic captioning system provided, it is a fantastic way to supply students with the materials that they need to excel in the classroom. There are two ways to access Panopto: through Canvas or through the Panopto Cloud web portal.
Enable Panopto Within Your Canvas Course
- Go to your Canvas course and find the Settings tab at the bottom of the course.
- Click the Navigation box within the Settings menu.
- Scroll down to the disabled pages, and find the option that says Panopto, click on the three dots, and press Enable.
Creating Your First Video Using Panopto Capture
- Click the Panopto tab in your Canvas course.
- Click the Create button that displays on the Panopto page.
- A display window will pop up prompting you to choose an option for capturing/uploading your video. In this tutorial, we will cover how to record using Panopto Capture, which records natively in any browser.
- When you click Panopto Capture for the first time, it will ask you which webcam and microphone you would like to use to record your video. There will be a sample display for your webcam, as well as the ability to view the sound level for your microphone.
- To begin sharing your screen press the Screens and Apps button; a window displaying the different tabs that can be shared will appear. When an option is selected, the text will turn blue, and a preview of the capture will appear. If the window you are capturing has audio necessary for the presentation, such as videos or audio clips, ensure the “Also share tab audio” option is selected.
- Your screen should now show your webcam display in the bottom right, and the capture of your screen above. Whenever you are ready to begin recording, click the red button at the bottom, and begin your presentation.
- Panopto can generate captions in over 20 languages. By default, the captions will be automatically generated in English. To reprocess the captions in a different language, select the video's settings. Select the Captions tab from the left-side menu, and under the section that says "Available Captions", expand the drop-down menu. Click "change language" and select the language spoken in the video. Then select "Save and reprocess".
Creating Your First Video Using the Panopto Application
- Click the Panopto tab in your Canvas course.
- Click the Create button that displays on the Panopto page.
- Select the Panopto for Windows (or Mac) option.
- Select the Download Panopto option if you do not already have the Panopto application installed, or Open Panopto if you do.
- Once you install and open Panopto, on the left side, you should see options for choosing your video and audio source, with a slider to adjust the audio level.
- In the Secondary Sources tab, you can choose whether or not you wish to display your second screen if you have one. Above the display of the presentation, you can choose which source will be the one captured in the recording, and you can switch between the presentation and your screen any time throughout the recording.
Editing Lecture Videos
- Once you are finished recording the lecture video, a menu will pop up displaying your video and showing the option to change the title and folder, and the option to edit or view the video.
- Click the Edit button to pull up the in-browser editor for the recording you have selected.
- On the left side of the screen, you will see a menu that displays all of the tabs for the video; to add captions click on the “Captions” tab. Captions should be automatically generated for the video after a short period of time, after which you have the ability to edit them as needed.
- On the right, you will see the video editing software. The feature we will most commonly use is the Cut tool to trim unnecessary sections of the video, such as before the lecture starts, or after it ends. To use the feature simply click the scissor icon and drag over unwanted sections of the recording. The section that will be cut from the video will be grayed out, and when playback is commenced, it should skip over these parts of the video.
- The “+” button allows you to add content to the lecture recording, such as another stream, a short clip, a YouTube video, and most importantly, a quiz.
- When the Add a quiz feature is chosen, a menu will pop up displaying the window to create the quiz. When you are done creating the quiz, it will display options for choosing what time in the video the quiz will be displayed to students, and options for whether the students can retake the quiz or review their answers.
Additional resources from Panopto are available for advance editing features.
Creating a Canvas Assignment from a Panopto Quiz
- Navigate to the Assignments page of your Canvas course.
- Click the + Assignment button to navigate to the assignment creation page.
- Scroll down to find the Submission Type option and select External Tool.
- Click the “Find” button that displays to the right of the URL box.
- Scroll down in this menu until you find the Panopto option and click “Panopto” to open the menu.
- For typical grading, choose “Grade based on quiz results” and press continue.
- Select the video you would like to use as an assignment and click the Insert button.
- Your assignment is now ready; you can now edit any other aspects of the assignment that you desire.
Note: The quiz grade that is reported to the Canvas grade book will be the total number of correct answers, divided by the total number of questions, multiplied by the point value you choose when creating the assignment. If you include multiple quizzes in one video, these will roll up into one cumulative score.
