Tool Description
Mediasite provides Course Instructors the ability to record, upload, share, and view video content in any Canvas course. The combined power of Canvas with Mediasite means all your videos have a central secure home benefiting from Mediasite’s in-video search, engagement tools, and viewership statistics.The first step to using Mediasite will be to enable the Mediasite Collection feature in your course navigation pane. To do this:
- Navigate to Settings in the course navigation pane.
- Select the Navigation tab in the top menu.
- Locate Mediasite Collection from the list of options available for enabling.
- Click the three dots menu icon on the option and select Enable.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Save.
- The Mediasite Collection houses your course's media files that you make available for student viewing.
Uploading a Presentation to Mediasite
Mediasite is a great way to store content and add it to a course. Prior to uploading a presentation to Mediasite, ensure the location of the presentation is known to you in your computer files. To upload a presentation to Mediasite:

- Navigate to Settings in the course navigation pane.
- Navigate to the tool list on the right side of the page and select the My Mediasite icon. Your My Presentations dashboard will open.
- If prompted, authorize Mediasite to use Canvas
- In the top left corner, click Add Presentation.
- Click Choose File to upload a video file.
- Navigate to the file in your system's folders that needs uploading and select open.
- Enter a Title, Description, and then choose a Destination file by selecting Change and then User Channel. Select your course channel from the drop down options.
- Click Create Presentation.
- The video may take some time to successfully upload.
- In the screen that appears, make any necessary adjustments to the video.

Auto Captioning in Mediasite
To add auto captioning to your new or current presentations in Mediasite, you can follow these steps below:
- Go to your course and on the left navigation panel, go to Settings.
- Click on My Mediasite on the top-right panel.
- In the left navigation panel of Mediasite, click Add Presentation if creating a new presentation. For current presentations, please skip to step 6.
- Choose either Record Video or Upload Video.
- Enter a Title and Description, select My Drafts as the destination, and click Create Presentation.
- Once the video is uploaded, click Edit Details in the top-right panel.
- Go to the Delivery tab.
- Check Audio Transcriptions.
- Choose a Captioning Provider.
- Select a Captioning Profile: Mediasite Standard Caption.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Save.
Allow time for the video to be processed. Captioning may take a few hours. You will receive an email notification once the captioning is complete. You can then go back to edit captions and to clean up any errors that you identify.
Edit Captioning in Mediasite
Once the auto captioning processing is done, you can confirm its accuracy and edit it as necessary by following these steps below:
- Go to your course and on the left navigation panel, go to Settings.
- Click on My Mediasite on the top-right panel.
- In the My Mediasite dashboard,click Edit Captions.
- The Edit Captions Dashboard will open with a video playback on the right side and the transcript with time frame on the left side as displayed below.
- If you have watched the video and made a note of common inaccurate words, you can click Find and Replace tab to find the word one-by-one. Simply type in the correct word to replace them within the text box next to the Replace all button.
- Click the Replace All button; when a pop-up opens to confirm the changes, click OK to confirm or Cancel for cancellation. Once you click OK, you will get a successful pop-up notification from the system.
- To edit the transcript, play the video and use the textbox located on the left side of the dashboard. Each transcript segment is editable individually, based on its corresponding timestamp range.
- If you need to stop editing and continue the work at a later time, save your progress by clicking Save at the top right corner of the Edit Captions Dashboard. It will apply your caption changes to your video permanently. You will get a successful pop-up notification from the system.
- Once you have completed all required edits and want to finalize the editing process, you can click the dropdown next to the Save button and click Save & Exit. You will get a pop-up successful notification from the system.
- Click Home to get you back to My Mediasite main dashboard.
Embedding a Mediasite Presentation to a Canvas Module
Once a presentation has been uploaded to Mediasite, it can be embedded into a module within Canvas. This allows students to seamlessly access the video without leaving Canvas. To add the video to a module:
- Navigate to Mediasite Collection on the course navigation pane.
- Locate the presentation that needs to be added and click on the title.
- On the right sidebar, click Share Presentation.
- Click Copy to copy the link.
- Click Modules on the course navigation pane.
- Locate the module that the video will be added to and click + on the right side of the module.
- In the dropdown menu, select External URL.
- Paste the URL in the URL box and add a Page Name.
- Click Add Item.
Adding a Mediasite Presentation to a Page
Once a presentation has been uploaded to Mediasite, it can be embedded into a page within Canvas. This allows students to seamlessly access the video without leaving Canvas. To add it to a new Canvas page:
- Navigate to Pages in the course navigation pane.
- Click View All Pages in the top left.
- Click + Page in the top right corner.
- Enter a name for the page and any additional settings.
- In the top menu bar, click the Mediasite icon.
- If the icon is not visible, click the down arrow next to the plug icon and locate Mediasite.
- Locate the presentation that needs adding and click Add to [Course Name].
- Select the method that the presentation will be embedded with.
- The video should now be embedded.
- Add any additional content to the page and select Save.
Creating a Quiz in Mediasite
Instructors can also use Mediasite to create quizzes within videos. This is easy in Mediasite and offers an alternative to using SCORM in some cases.
Mediasite allows you to upload presentation and add quizzes to the presentation. This allows instructors to assess what students are learning while watching a presentation. After uploading a presentation, to add a quiz:

- Navigate to the presentation in Mediasite.
- Click Edit Quizzes on the right sidebar.
- Choose they type of quiz you would like to attach. Each will adjust the Settingssection.
- Each quiz type has it’s benefits. However, if you would like to use it as a grade, click Scored.
- Add a title, description and select Next.
- On the new screen, click +Quiz.
- Enter a Title, description, and the position (time) the quiz will appear when watching the video.
- Under the newly created quiz, select Add Question.
- Fill out the prompt with the appropriate information.
- Repeat steps 7-8 until you have added all the questions for that section of the video.
- Repeat steps 5-9 to add questions at additional quizzes to the video.
- Select Save in top menu.

Adding a Mediasite Quiz to Canvas
Once a Mediasite presentation has been created with a quiz, that quiz can be linked to an Assignment in Canvas to be used as a grade. To add the quiz to the assignment:

- Navigate to Assignments in the course navigation pane.
- Click +Assignment in the top right corner.
- Fill out the appropriate settings for the assignment.
- Under Submission Type, select External Tool.
- Click the Find button.
- In the pop-up window, locate Mediasite Assignment.
- Locate the Mediasite presentation that needs added and click Add to [Course Name].
- Choose the method that the video will be attached with.
- In Canvas, click Select.
- Save and Publish the assignment.
